Making the Most of Featured Images and Post Thumbnails

One of the best ways to bring attention to something is to slip it into some shiny packaging (there’s a reason billions are spent on package design and branding). Adding an image to the articles on your website is, in a sense, packaging them into something more compelling than before. Not every post needs its own image, but it’s great for when you really want to draw the reader’s attention to a specific article.

There are two ways we can tie images to posts throughout your site. The first is big, front and center images for your featured content. Not every site needs this, but it can be helpful in directing traffic to desired areas. A second, more subtle place for images is right in line with the various posts throughout your index (as you probably noticed, this is how our blog is set up). Depending on your needs, we can combine the two methods.

Here’s how to add a Featured Image to a WordPress post

Once your site is configured to use thumbnails there will be a box in the bottom right entitled “Featured Image” when creating posts. Clicking on the link provided there will get you to the standard media upload box. From there a new or existing image can be selected by clicking the “Use as featured image” link near the bottom of any image; it’s actually situated right by the delete button, so watch out for that.

If you need help with ideas or just need us to whip up some images for you to use, we’ll be happy to lend a hand. No matter how great your writing may be, your site is bound to look livelier with some pictures floating around in all that text.
